Managing Pain Through Acupuncture
Acupuncture is a completely natural healing therapy without side effects. It can greatly improve your quality of life and health conditions by enhancing your body’s self healing ability.
Acupuncture’s most common indication is to treat pain management. The mechanism is not fully understood, but studies show Acupuncture promotes the release of neurotransmitters such as beta endorphin, enkephalins and neuro-modulator locally and in the Central Nervious System (CNS). Imaging studies of the nervous system have shown that the insertion of needles triggers the flow of electromagnetic signals through the body. These signals, in turn, stimulate the release of body’s natural painkillers and other substances that can help the body heal.
Acupuncture also activates the body's pain modulatory system, thereby changing the processing and perception of noxious information at various levels of the CNS.
Acupuncture works well for most kind of pain and also other health conditions such as: Musculoskeletal disorders, visceral pain, peripheral nerve neuralgia, cerebrovascular accident rehabilitation, and psycho-emotional disorders, & auto accident rehabilitation, etc.
How Deep Do the Needles Go, Does It Hurt?
How deep the needle goes depends upon the nature of the problem, the location of the points selected, the patient’s size, age, and constitution, and upon the acupuncturist’s style or training. Usually needles are inserted from ¼ to one inch in depth.
Most people are surprised and relieved to learn that acupuncture needles are very thin—unlike hypodermic needles, which are big, hollow and painful. After the needle is inserted, you may feel nothing or some vague numbness or electric sensation either around the needle or traveling up and down the affected meridian, or energy pathway.
Is It Safe?
Because acupuncture treatment is drug free, you avoid the risk of drugs which can cause many side effects or dependency. During each acupuncture session, your licensed acupuncturist can adjust the treatment according to your symptoms so that you receive constant monitoring of any changes.
Always inform any health practitioner about all pre-existing conditions, known problems, and the names of the medications you are taking.
Principle of Pain Management
Acupuncture is based on the theory of restoring free flow of energy through distinct meridians within the body. Pain is relieved when such balanced energy state is achieved. Clinical studies show more than 60 % of people who see acupuncturists are looking for pain relief — usually the kind that Western medicine cannot readily cure.
Including: back, neck, shoulder, knee sciatic, arthritis pain, migraines, menstrual cramps, and carpal tunnel syndrome.
What To Expect After Treatment?
Patients often experience the most dramatic results in the first treatment. Some patients experience an immediate total or partial relief of their pain or other symptoms. This relief may last or some pain may return. In few cases, there may be no immediate relief only to notice the pain diminish over the next coupled of days.
The number of treatments depends upon the duration, severity, and nature of your complaint. You may need only a simple treatment for an acute condition. A series of five to fifteen treatments may resolve many chronic problems. Some degenerative conditions may require many treatments over time.
